CANTALOUPE
(Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis)

Cantaloupes are part of the Cucurbitaceae plant family, along with honeydew melons, watermelons, and cucumbers. They are also commonly referred to as muskmelon (Cucumis melo), rock melon, or Persian melon. Popular with children and adults, cantaloupe can make a refreshing and healthy dessert, while their high water content helps prevent dehydration.

NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION

Cantaloupe is a bucket of nutrients: it’s loaded with vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) as well as vitamin C, and is a good source of the mineral potassium. Because cantaloupe contains over 90% water, it makes a great snack on a hot day. Cantaloupe is a heart-healthy choice that keeps blood pressure down and reduces the risk of stroke because of its high potassium and low sodium content.

SHORT STORY

The cantaloupe was originally cultivated during the 1700’s from seeds that were brought from Armenia. They were given the name Cantalupo, which is derived from a commune in Sabina near Tivoli, Italy.

VARIETIES

There are two main varieties of cantaloupe: North American cantaloupe and European cantaloupe. Both varieties are orange inside with a similar taste.

FUN FACT

Christopher Columbus brought cantaloupe to America on one of his voyages to the New World.
