ROMA TOMATOES
(Solanum lycopersicum Roma)
The Roma tomato is a plum tomato used both for canning and producing tomato paste because of its thick skin and low moisture content. It has an elongated egg-like shape, and it grows to about three inches long. These tomatoes are not juicy and are not fit for slicing. Instead, they are ideal for making sauces, stews, and soups, although they do well in both cooked and raw preparations.
NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION
Roma tomatoes, are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, vitamin K, and folate. Additionally, tomatoes are one of the best sources of lycopene — an antioxidant shown to help protect against certain types of cancer and protect our skin from sun damage. Numerous studies have found that diets rich in tomato products can lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and improve heart health.
SHORT STORY
Roma tomato is an open-pollinated variety and it was developed by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Beltsville, Maryland in the 1950s.
