Serrano pepper is a type of chili pepper that has its origins in the mountainous regions of the Mexican states of Puebla and Hidalgo. The name of the pepper is a reference to the mountains (sierras) of these regions. They are often confused with jalapeño peppers but are smaller and are around 5 times spicier and hotter at a fairly hot 10.000 – 20.000 Scoville heat units on average. They are between 1 and 2 inches in length and about 1/2 inch in diameter, with a slight taper and a rounded end.
NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION
Serrano peppers are very healthy and nutritious. They are an excellent source of vitamin A and C. These vitamins help with the synthesis of red blood cells along with helping to support the immune system. The high levels of capsaicin provide anti-inflammatory properties and also provide relief from migraine and headaches. Serrano peppers are a low-calorie food with most of their calories coming from their dietary fiber.

Serrano peppers are named for the mountain ridges in Mexico where they originated and they are very popular in Mexican cuisine.

Serranos are a favorite ingredient in many dishes. Most often used in their immature and green stage, they make fiery fresh salsas. Fire, Hidalgo, Hot Rod Hybrid, Huasteco, Serrano Purple, Serrano Tampiqueno, are just a few.
FUN FACT
Some people think that a Serrano’s seeds are the source of its heat. The pepper’s heat actually comes from the ribs. The seeds grow adjacent to the ribs, which is why they taste spicy.
