(Capsicum annuum)
Jalapeño is a medium-sized chili pepper measuring an average of 2-3.5 inches in length but growing up to 6 inches long. It is popular for the flavor and for it’s mild heat level, which averages around 5,000 Scoville Heat Units. Because it is relatively mild, jalapeño pepper can be eaten whole. Jalapeño is full of vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, and antioxidants, which provide many health benefits.
NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION
Jalapeños are rich in vitamins A and C and potassium. They also have carotene – an antioxidant that may help fight damage to your cells – as well as folate, vitamin K, and B vitamins. Capsaicin, the chemical compound responsible for the heat, may help speed up metabolism and reduce hunger, relieve pain, aid digestion, and even lower blood pressure.
SHORT STORY
The name “Jalapeño” is Spanish for “Jalapa” (or Xalapa), the capital of Veracruz, Mexico. Jalapeños were originally grown there, hence the name.
