Poblano Pepper

POBLANO PEPPER
(Capsicum annuum)

Poblano is a mild variety of chili pepper. They are named after their supposed place of origin, the state of Puebla in Central Mexico where they are believed to have been first cultivated. The pods typically grow 4 inches long, are a very dark green in color, ripening to dark red or brown. Their heat can be described as mild to medium-hot, ranking between 1,000 and 2,000 Scoville heat units.

NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION

Poblano peppers have an amazing nutritional content. A medium-sized pepper has about ¾ of the daily value needs of vitamin A, and a quarter of vitamin B2. They are low in calories thanks to their high water content and they have a high amount of vitamin C and vitamin B6. The nutrients in the Poblano provide a natural, powerful pain relief and reduce inflammatory pain, like prostate infection and arthritis, due to their quercetin content.

SHORT STORY

The Poblano Chile originated in Puebla, Mexico, a region in the heart of the country. The Poblano’s wide use in central Mexico resulted in good health for its inhabitants also – just one Poblano pepper contains 95% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C.

VARIETIES

There are two different colors of Poblano, red and green, and the red variety is significantly hotter than the green.

FUN FACT

When Poblano peppers are dried, they are called Ancho Peppers, which are widely used in many cuisines.
